When you’re managing a team of employees, you’re responsible for identifying and promoting talented leaders at the right time. Not every high-performing employee is cut out for a management position, so you’ll need to carefully evaluate whether a particular person is ready to move up—and whether current business needs align with that timing.

There are many ways to determine whether a worker is ready to move up in your company. Below, 15 Forbes Coaches Council members shared common signs an employee deserves a promotion, and how to determine what type of promotion they receive. If your employee meets these criteria, it may be time to discuss advancing their career path.

15 Signs Your Employee Deserves A Promotion

1. They Volunteer For Additional Work

Some team members manage their day, such that they can leave at 4:45 without being noticed. Those ready for the next challenge often have “free hands” and volunteer for the toughest assignments, additional work or the pursuit of learning and growth. All three constitute ample evidence that those select team members are ready for promotion. Their work ethic got them there. Reward them accordingly! – John HittlerEvoking Genius

2. They Ask Excellent Questions

When someone asks engaging questions about work and about how we are reaching our goals I know it is time for promotion consideration. I can see them using their creativity when they are asking questions. Continued curiosity is a sign they may embrace new challenges. Turn their questions around. Ask, “What would you do if I gave you more authority to achieve this?” Then begin to create a new role. – John M. O’ConnorCareer Pro Inc.
