f businesses want to stay ahead of the competition, they need to stay current with best practices, new trends and emerging technology, including artificial intelligence.

“Companies of all sizes and types are increasing their spending on emerging technologies to improve the customer experience, increase efficiencies, find new ways to leverage the growing amounts of data available and, above all, stay competitive,” said Brad Fisher, partner, data and analytics lead at KPMG.

To stay current with AI, businesses need to create diverse teams that build, execute and monitor AI. According to a prediction released by KPMG, here are the top AI jobs businesses should create in 2019 to increase their AI abilities.

Fisher believes AI architects are important to scaling a business’s AI, but there is a shortage of employees in this role. An Indeed search for AI architects shows more than 3,000 jobs.

“AI architects are skilled process engineers who are responsible for looking at business processes and determining where AI can be injected successfully,” Fisher said. “Furthermore, they oversee AI models over time to ensure it is operating as intended and removing mundane tasks.”

“An AI product manager serves as a liaison across several business teams to ensure solutions are successfully implemented and can be deployed at scale,” Fisher said. “They also work with human resources to identify organizational changes to achieve optimal performance.”

A search on Glassdoor for AI product managers returns more than 1,400 jobs in different cities.

A data scientist analyzes and interprets complex data to create statistics, and explains how the data can help businesses.

“With the ever-growing amount of data available to businesses, there is a shortage of experts with the skills to clean this data, and then design and apply the appropriate algorithms to glean meaningful insights,” Fisher said.

Most data scientists at least have a master’s degree, and some even have Ph.D.s. According to Glassdoor, data scientists typically have a degree in statistics, math, computer science or economics. On average, they make $161,890 per year, and there are more than 25,000 data scientists jobs available.

“Software engineers write, debug, maintain and test software that instructs a computer to accomplish certain tasks, such as saving information, performing calculations, etc.,” according to Glassdoor. “A software engineer will convert what needs to happen into one of many programming languages.”

Fisher said software engineers are important in 2019 because they work with data scientists to bring AI into production. On Glassdoor, there are more than 136,000 jobs available for software engineers, and they make an average of $140,531 per year.

As AI continues to grow, the role of AI ethicists will become even more important. Existing company leaders can initially fill these roles because they are familiar with the business and its technology. However, Fisher suggests it may need to be the primary responsibility of one person.

“These professionals are responsible for establishing AI frameworks that mirror the company’s standards and code of ethics and ensuring these guidelines are upheld,” Fisher said.
