Tumblr User Gets Called Out for ’Cultural Appropriation,’ But He’s Actually Japanese

An anonymous Tumblr user was shut down with a simple set of photos after accusing another user of appropriating Japanese culture.

Tumblr user Higitsunes received a rude message from an anonymous user criticizing him for wearing “kimonos” and for taking Japanese culture, according to Bored Panda.

The message went on to bash the user’s appearance by telling them that the traditional outfit doesn’t suit them.

“Why the f**k are you and that other white chic wearing kimonos you people need to stop taking Japanese culture also you two look horrible in the kimonos it doesn’t even match you,” the anonymous user said in the message.

Higitsunes, however, destroyed the hater with a short message accompanied by three photos showing the anonymous user their Japanese passport.

“It’s a yukata not a kimono,” the Tumblr user said in his reply.

Other Tumblr users had a lot to say about the exchange. One user, kamiyu910, claims Japanese people want non-Japanese people to wear kimonos so “it doesn’t fade away.”

But another user quickly slammed the comment by stating, “The art and act of Kitsuke will not die anytime soon. It may not be popular as it once was because of the introduction of western clothing and so many people don’t wear it as a daily outfit, the amount of money it takes to properly own an actual kimono and many accessories, the having to fit the motifs and colors (if you want to be more traditional) to particular seasons and times, and the complicated act of putting it on but it’s still popular enough and it’s still worn enough.”
